“Das neue Album Tendu von Jarry Singla, Ramesh Shotam und Christian Ramond überwältigt”
Jazzzeitung 11-2020

“The new album Tendu by Jarry Singla, Ramseh Shotam and Christian Ramdon overwhelms”
Jazzzeitung 11-2020

Listening to pianist Jarry Singla, double bassist Christian Ramond and percussionist Ramesh Shotham, a music-related core statement by composer Karlheinz Stockhausen comes to mind: “Every human being carries the whole of humanity within himself.”

In Eastern Flowers this means concretely an unsuspected interweaving of Indian art and temple music with European jazz, but also with elements of baroque counterpoint or with the special octave divisions of the Frenchman Olivier Messiaen called Modi.
What Jarry Singla and his two partners let us hear is gripping transcultural music by three virtuosos who impress with their technical confidence and agility, their rhythmic balance, their richness of variations and the constant transparency of the sound. Mystical reflection and modern forward thrust are conceived as one here – a world magic full of intuition, intimacy and the joy of improvisation.
The ensemble, founded in 2009 by Jarry Singla, plays mainly compositions by the German-Indian pianist and has performed nationally and internationally – so far at outstanding festivals and concert series such as Buenos Aires Jazz, Jazz Utsav New Delhi, Bolivia Festijazz, Acht Brücken – Musik für Köln and Musik in Donaueschingen.
His two highly acclaimed musical accompanists also have Indian roots. WDR Jazz Prize winner Ramesh Shotham is originally from Chennai in southern India and is one of the busiest Indian jazz percussionists ever in Europe. Christian Ramond also has a German-Indian background and has played with jazz legends such as Albert Mangelsdorff, Kenny Wheeler and Lee Konitz.
